Think mine had holes there, I thought it was odd though 'cos the gaskets I got didn't have the holes, so it blocked them off Confused I've been running it like that for a good few thousand miles now and all's well Wink
Oh but mines a 2.9, don't know if that makes any difference Confused
Are they just really badly blocked, or is that metal I'm seeing Question

Yep, 2.9 head has the extra cooling channels between the chambers whereas the 2.8 doesn't.

One mod is to drill a hole in the head for each channel ie where you have the pitting. (I've got the details in a V6 tuning book somewhere - I'll see if I can find it...). Think I used something like an 8mm dia drill bit and you have to be careful when you break through the water jacket not to drill any further and consequently ruin the head.

Quite easy to do really and anything to improve cooling on the 2.8 is a bonus IMO.

Perhaps the exhaust valve stem oil seals are 'plastic' due to the higher temps reached than the inlet valves? Not sure if that's correct though.

Looks as tho u may have m8, but you should'nt worry bout it too much cos 2.8's dont have any major problems without the holes so your 2.9 as you say should be ok Wink
